I am guessing this because before I published the article, I searched google for some of the information to make sure it was accurate and noticed these sources.

I agree with your comment that it's long overdue that the US took their heads out of the sand and converted to the metric system. It would make things so much easier for all their trade partners, not to mention their citizens would have a much easier time with the metric system once they embraced it.

The ONLY reason that I would agree with them for not going metric is that once the price of gasoline is converted from gallons to litres, the gasoline companies can rip us off to the limit. Can you imagine if the price of gasoline went up $12 cents a litre in the US and they knew that was similar to about 50 cents per gallon, they would all come to the gasoline stations with shotguns-a-blazin' Maybe an overexaggeration, but you get my drift, some compaines have taken advantage of the metric system in Canada. With this said, the metric system is still the way to go in the long run.

I hope this helps,
MarkMark Argentinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10720520986774448200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17649054.post-43275972274119281312008-10-12T07:22:00.000-04:002008-10-12T07:22:00.000-04:00Mark:I would really like to know where this articl...Mark:
I would really like to know where this article came from, since it seems to be very accurate and true.

The metric system is in a mess in Canada and we are waiting for our big stupid brother, the US.

John Bailes, President, Canadian Metric Association. jdbailes@sympatico.ca 416-699-2639Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17649054.post-57202980336957886632008-10-12T02:43:00.000-04:002008-10-12T02:43:00.000-04:00Mark,Your article is very interesting and educatio...Mark,
Your article is very interesting and educational. I have been lecturing basic sciences in African universities, in time when the countries of Africa have been changing their fps system to SI system. Very interesting and challenging period! It took some years to accomplish the change.
Suprisingly, the change was more visible and easier done in business (packaging, volumes balances) and streets (kilometer posts, speed signes, change to a right hand drive)than in a university laboratory. Why did they succeeded in relatively smooth way? You may say that if "there is will, there is a way". Although, it is true, the countries were less developed and the changes had not meet big resistance. At that time there was no book for students on experimental science, where all quantities were to be measured and the answered expressed in SI units. By the same token there was no "conversion", so hampering introduction of SI in USA. The problem shifted to mathematical manipulation of power of ten notation, SI prefixes,inter-conversion wthin the metric system, accuracy, precision and the uncertainties of measurement or calculated quantities.
This prompted me to write the book on experimental science: "SI Units, Conversion and Measurement Skills". You may learn about the 2007 edition of the book visiting my website: http://www.wacek.co.za.
Some gremlins(?) move "Reviews" folder to chapter 10.
Happy reading!
Wacek Kijewski

PO Box 2358 George 6530 South Africa, tel/fax: 27 448840486
http://www.wacek.co.za
e-mail: metricfun@gmail.com
info@wacek.co.zaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
